A Short Story

Ceramic art is art made from ceramic materials, including clay. It may take forms including artistic pottery, including tableware, tiles, figurines and other sculpture. As one of the plastic arts, ceramic art is one of the visual arts. While some ceramics are considered fine art, as pottery or sculpture, most are considered to be decorative, industrial or applied art objects.

From antiquity, the art of pottery was developed in Samos, which reaches to the present day. In the pottery workshops in the villages of Mavratzaioi, Koumaradeοi, Myloi and Karlovasi, beautiful vases are made. The most famous vase of Samian pottery is the “Pythagorean Cup”.

According to tradition, Pythagoras made a mug, applying the laws of physics, for his students to drink wine in moderation. Internally, the mug had a line that defined how one should fill it. One drop above and the mug emptied all its wine from a hidden hole in the base. With a simple application of plumbing, Pythagoras teaches the meaning of the measure, that is, to enjoy the wine we already have in our cup, drawing the maximum benefit!
